I qualified in July 1982 from the London Foot Hospital, part of University College hospital in the heart of the West End and joined the Society of Chiropodists the same year.

My first job was working for the Barking, Havering and Brentwood Health Authority, Working in clinics at Brentwood, Upminster, Hornchurch, Elm Park, Harold Hill, and special needs hospitals such as Warley Hospital in Brentwood and St Georges in Hornchurch. Most afternoons were spent visiting housebound patients.

I continued with this type of work for about 18 months and 6 months previously dipped my toes into the world of private practice working on Saturdays at a clinic in Romford.

I then started a private practice in Shenfield Road, Brentwood treating a mix of private and NHS patients on a contractual basis from Brentwood A.H.A. I stayed here for about 6 and a half years and decided the rent had become excessive and I moved to my current address at Alexander Lane.

This is both my home and my workplace. In 1995 I had a purpose built extension for the surgery constructed. This incorporated a waiting room, toilet, and surgery all on the ground floor with just one step up from the drive, enabling less mobile patients to park literally right outside the door and come in.

I treat the usual range of foot problems like corns, verrucaes, hard and dry skin and specialise in nail surgery, the painless removal of ingrowing and septic toenails (part or whole) under local anaesthetic. I can also take plastercasts of feet to enable specialist orthotic insoles to be made.

If a patient is housebound or unwell a home visit service is available.

My training involved taking a 3 year full time course which has now been granted Degree status.

Topics covered included anatomy, general anatomy, physiology, podology, pharmacology, medicine, life science, biomechanics, the manufacture of insoles and other foot appliances and 3 years practical training and visiting outside hospitals and clinics.

The qualification I have earned is called state registration. the only recognised qualification that will allow you to work as a chiropodist in the National Health Service and to administer a local anaesthetic. Other chiropody qualifications can be gained by anybody doing a part-time or even a correspondence course. Always make sure your chiropodist has the initials S.R.Ch after their name wherever you go for treatment.

The surgery is conveniently located just around the corner from the High Street, Railway station.

To book an appointment call 01277.222233 anytime or leave a message if I'm not there.
